Ghana Kho Kho Federation Pays Gratitude Visit to the Indian High Commission After World Cup Success
Accra, January 26, 2025 – The Ghana Kho Kho Federation (GKKF), led by its President, Mr. Wonder Goldry Sitsofe Mandel, paid a courtesy visit to the Indian High Commission in Accra following an impressive performance at the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup held in New Delhi, India. The team was warmly received by the Consular, with a special surprise welcome by His Excellency Manish Gupta, High Commissioner of India to Ghana.
H.E. Manish Gupta commended Team Ghana for their remarkable participation and outstanding achievements at the World Cup. He highlighted their dedication and performance as a proud moment for Ghana and a significant step in promoting Kho Kho on the global stage. He further assured the High Commission’s unwavering support for the continued development of Kho Kho in Ghana.
The Ghana Kho Kho Federation President, Mr. Mandel, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Indian High Commission for their pivotal role in supporting Team Ghana. From facilitating travel arrangements to ensuring a smooth stay in India, the High Commission played an instrumental part in the team’s journey. Mr. Mandel also presented five Team Ghana players who received individual awards at the tournament, including recognition as Best Attackers, Best Defenders, and the tournament’s MVP.
The visit reflects the strong diplomatic and sporting ties between Ghana and India, as Kho Kho—a traditional Indian sport—has found a new home in Ghana through the federation's efforts. The journey began in 2018 with SportDrive’s INDIGAME initiative, aimed at formalizing Ghana’s indigenous sports, including Antoa Kyere, which shares similarities with Kho Kho. In 2019, the foundation was laid when Ghanaian students attended a Kho Kho coaching course in India. Their passion and research culminated in Team Ghana’s participation at the World Cup, following six months of rigorous training and preparation.
The High Commissioner extended a special invitation to Team Ghana to attend India’s National Day celebrations on January 27, 2025. The team will be honored before diplomats, dignitaries, and the Indian community in Ghana, underscoring the unique bond between the two nations through sport.
The Ghana Kho Kho Federation’s achievements at the World Cup mark a historic milestone in Ghana’s sporting landscape and a promising future for the development of Kho Kho in the country. This visit serves as a testament to the unyielding dedication of the federation, players, and officials in elevating Ghanaian sports to the global stage.
