Kerala team coach Shobi.R

(Shobi. R Kerala State Sports Council Kho-Kho Coach)

Kho-Kho the indigenous game of India is one of the oldest games of India which is spreading across the world at a rapid speed. Shobi. R coach from Kerala is part of the National Camp in Delhi. He is the man behind grooming players of Kerala. First time in India KKFI and Ultimate Kho-Kho launched a high-performance assessment and Scientific Analysis sports evaluation program named Rise in Sports Excellence.
Kiren Rijiju Sports Minister of India inaugurated a national Kho-Kho Coaching camp to scientifically analyze the players of Kho-Kho. This is what every Kho-Kho lover is eagerly waiting for so that Kho-Kho will take new steps to move forward.
Shamily Featured Columnist caught up with Shobi. R during the national camp. Thanks to Shobi. R to give his precious time to promoting Kho-Kho worldwide.

Q1. When did you get to associate with Kho-Kho?
Ans. I got associated with the game of Kho-Kho when I was studying in the 5th Standard.

Q2. As you are part of the National Camp, what do you learn from here and how will it be beneficial for Kho Kho?
Ans. It is the first time in the history of Kho Kho that our Federation has conducted such a grand and highly innovative Camp. First of all, I wish to thank Kerala Sports Council, Kerala Kho Kho Association, and Kho
Kho Federation of India for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity and experience. This Camp provides all the scientific tests. Now our game techniques and tactics have undergone many changes. The time of play in an innings has now been reduced to seven minutes
from the traditional nine minutes. Also, there is restructuring in the points system and introduction of ‘Wazir’ to win more points. These are the new things we have learned from this Camp, and we will surely implement these changes in our Kho Kho players.

Q3.How do you train your players? What is your objective when you train players?
Ans. In my Training process, at first, I prepare a Training Schedule. It will depend on the level of players. This will be based on the Fitness Components, Skill Techniques, and Tactics.
My objective is always that, all players who undergo training under me, should become Players of National and International Competitions and also that they get a good future through this game in their life.

Q4.How you select players for national tournaments in Kerala?

Ans. There are 14 Districts in Kerala. At first, we conduct District Level
Championships. Then we will conduct the State Level Championship.
From there, a Selection Committee will select the Good Players,
provide them Coaching and send them for Nationals.

Q5.What usually is the diet of players in Kerala so that players get all the necessary nutrition?

Ans. Two Kho Kho Hostels are working under the Kerala State Sports
Council – One each for Boys and Girls. The players are provided with good nutritional food there. Nearly 50% of the students are from poor families and hence they have not received a good diet plan. But in these hostels, they are provided with good nutritional food.

Q6. Kerala team is the pool qualifier team in Nationals and also shows the best performance in some major tournaments. What you think the players or associations or govt. need to do so that team will get top positions in upcoming tournaments?

Ans. It is really glad to say that our Women Team got First, Second, and Third Positions in various national tournaments. The Men’s Team also won the Second Position in National Games and Third Position in the last three years. This achievement was possible only because of a group of dynamic personalities who lead the Kerala Kho Kho Association and the various District Associations. Kerala Sports Council provide all the facilities for the players during the coaching camp and
competitions. Our Association had a great time for the last 12 years under the leadership of Sri. G. V. Pillai Sir. Now Sri. K.S. Balagopal Sir is the President and Sri. G. Radhakrishnan Sir (Rtd. SAI Coach) is the Secretary of the Kerala Kho Kho Association. Sports Council Senior
Coach Sri. Jayan Sir, Coach Sri. Ashique Sir and some dedicated Physical Education Lecturers and Teachers and Senior Players are working hard in their own Centres to achieve the best possible results.
In Kerala, Kho Kho players do not have many job opportunities. If they get more job opportunities definitely more players will come forward to this game, which will ultimately bring more achievements.

Q7.What are your achievements in Kho-Kho?

Ans.Ans. I have participated in the Sub Junior, Junior, and Senior National Championships and also in the All India Inter-University Championship. My Players have participated in different National Tournaments and have secured medals for our State. I have also represented different National Competitions as a Coach and have secured Medals.

Q8. What are your suggestions to boost Kho-Kho?

Ans.Kho Kho is India’s very own age-old and home-grown sport. Fifteen
years ago we had to explain to others on how to play the game. In Coaches language we are in the period of Competitions and our preparatory period is over. The dynamic leaders in the Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) now play an important role in the widespread popularity of the game. Moreover, Kho Kho has now been included in the Asian Championship in which, most of the countries have now started playing this game. If more job opportunities are created in this field, I am quite sure that this game will develop further. Above all, as the dream project of KKFI “Ultimate Kho Kho League” becomes a reality, the game of Kho Kho will undoubtedly find its place in the front seat itself, along with other major games of our country.

Q9. How many clubs are active in Kerala. How they are working and generating players.

Ans. Exactly I don’t know. But a lot of clubs are there. Physical education teachers are giving practice during their school time and some are working after school hours.

Q10. Any Words for Voice of International Player?
